separate hosting accounts, will this work?

I read somewhere that there is little value in backlinking between your own websites because google can tell that they are on the same server and kind of treats them more like internal links. Is this true? And if so, is there any logic in maybe having two separate hosting accounts with some websites on one and some on the other, that way any linking between the two would be better value? Does anybody do this, or am i talking nonsense?
